This week in Waka Whanake, we have started learning about fractions.
Mrs Mason, Miss Fraser and Whaea Tracey showed us a picture of a pie chart and we brainstormed all the things we NOTICED about the pie chart and all the things we WONDERED. See our ideas below...
Next, we were given fraction pieces to explore. We tried to see what different combinations we could use to make a 'whole' and discovered which pieces were halves, quarters, thirds, fifths and even twelfths!
One of our 'wonderings' was whether we could learn to make our own pie chart? So watch this space...
Where can you use fractions at home, school or in everyday life? Comment and share your ideas with us!
it was cool finding out new fractions
ReplyDeletei wonder what other graphs you could do
ReplyDeleteI love graphs in maths
ReplyDeleteI thought it was fun when we had to try and make shaes.:)
ReplyDeleteThe fractions were very cool I enjoyed it.
ReplyDeleteWhen my mum cuts a slice of watermelon, she divides it into 4. I get one quarter. Katie
ReplyDeleteIt's really good seeing you work on the fractions guys, keep it up. We had pizza at the lake last night, and Max and I had half each. That means we ate a WHOLE pizza between the two of us. We had full tummies.
ReplyDeleteHi Rooms 19 and 20! I am loving looking at your photos, videos and hard work! Room 14 thought your work on fractions was very interesting! We have been learning about fractions too. Maybe you could help us learn more about fractions in the playground if you see us!
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing,
Love From Miss Woodfield
Room 6 have seen an activity like this too! We think that we use fractions a lot in our lives. Jaz said when she goes shopping she looks for bargains! Sometimes things have 50% off which means that it is half price or 25% off which is 1/4 of the price off. Cullen and Lydia said we use fractions when baking... 3/4 cup of flour etc. Coaches and teachers use fractions when making groups. Mrs Wills asked our class day to split into thirds.... we had 27 in our class. How many would be in each group?
ReplyDeleteSummer enjoyed putting the fraction pieces into the holes to make one whole, they needed to use team work to find the right pieces to fit in the gaps. Spelling test: hole and whole :)
ReplyDeleteWell done everyone, it looks like a very colourful way to learn about fractions. Zoey & I use fractions when we bake! :)
ReplyDeletewhen my mum was making scones she made 4 of them .
ReplyDeleteps there jam scones.
Holly and I have been talking about half price things at the shops and how that works, that means mummy can buy two things for herself at the same price.
ReplyDeletehi some times when I go shopping if a toy was $10 mummy lets me buy it when it is half price. which is $5
ReplyDeleteI love fraction's because you get smart and some times when you buy something it might be $6
ReplyDeleteand you will probably have $12 than you will have end up with $6.
